G'day - lloyd - 19.07.20
Hallo,
I have joined to learn how to upgrade 830. I would like to try to update to latest W10M and see if there are any modifications necessary for battery/performance.
I might also see if I can learn how to install adblock and maybe night light, also on 950/950 XL. I have never successfully used Interop Tools, first I will try Tourniquet's Phone Updater.
Sorry for my Englisch
Cheers

Hi lloyd!
G'day like glorry day?
You have nothing to apologize for.
With the Phone Updater you have chosen the right sweetheart. The update process with the Phone Updater is very simple and self-explanatory and the Phone Updater speaks English. Adblock for EDGE in 10M is not available. But you can use the Monument Browser there is this function. Night Light is very nice and Tourniquet was busy again.

Thank you both for the warm welcome! This is a very friendly forum
I have used Phone Updater I found elsewhere on the internet (version Phone Updater 0.4.25.6 / Database 1.1810.1) to get to Windows 1703, 10.0.15063.1868
(I had to use WDRT and OTC several times as I got a few errors along the way)
I think the latest version of Windows 1709 is 10.0.15254.603? I would like to update to this.
Thank you for the link to the blue light page Klaus, I cannot access yet but I look forward to reading. I saw on XDA that there is a hosts file loader some people use to block ads, have you heard of this?

It really doesn't matter, just do your best. Communication has always worked so far.
And now you're green, let's go.
Do you have a link to the xda thread discussing the adblock topic?
What errors did you get with the updates? Do you have error codes or screen shots of them?
10.0.15254.603 is the last official 1709 build. If you have time, desire and nerves, you should test on the 830 to see if the last 1703 build works better, 830=SD400=1.2GHz=1GB RAM. The render engine is the same for 1703 and 1709. You can use on both apps with the same update status.

Heya and welcome,
may I ask where you found the version of Phone Updater?

I'm a bit dizzy from reading a lot in the last days, and now reading autotranslated posts on this forum. Klaus some of your old posts seem very funny, you must have a good sense of humour (or maybe it is a gift from Google translator!)

From my search history, I had 80188302, 80004005, and one more (sorry don't remember!). No screenshots, sorry... I beat my head against the computer for a while but eventually prevailed. I was confused where to start and which software to use, I had a lot of trouble finding the right download, then I didn't realise I needed all the Visual C++ redistributables. I didn't know how Phone Updater worked and I think once I removed the phone before the installation/upload was complete (didn't realise it takes 30-60 minutes) so I had an incomplete set of packages. Couldn't retry the update so I hard resetted. I think another time I started an update before completing the welcome setup wizard (had to do another hard reset). On my final time I tried Phone Updater from 8.1, it failed so I did OTC, then Phone Updater to get to 1703

Thank you... I am currently trying to update to 1709 using Interop Tools beta 1.7.157.0 (fbl_release(gustavem).160621-0900 found here The Lumia 1020 (/920) and continuing Store access in 2020 via W10M...
Question: Which is the latest version of Interop Tools? There are so many versions on the internet and 2 versions on the Store!
Bonus question: Which is compatible/recommended for 830 & 950? vcReg or Interop or WP Internals, for registry tweaking and unlock (if I get more adventurous...)

Hi! Thank you for your hard work supporting us! I have been downloading things at random like a hungry bowerbird, but I'm pretty sure I found it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/windowsphone/comments/cusgt4/i_have_a_lumia_830_stuck_in_the_win_10_14393/
Final question (for today!): Are there any modifications required for 1709 to work well on 830? I am giving this phone to my mother, I mainly want stability and battery life. I read about paging file but if that is only for heavy multitasking, it is not necessary.
Thanks for your help and patience with my English! Danke scheun

Yes, I'm a funny guy if everything fits. But you also seem to be a joker (bonus question). In some browsers you can also have the text read out to you.
First of all, don't rush anything, do everything step by step. If you have installed everything as described in the instructions for the Phone Updater and the Phone Updater recognizes and reads the 830, then nothing stands in the way of the update fun. You can get the best installation if you start from ROM again. The best way to flash the 830 is to use WDRT, Windows Phone Internals (WPI) or ImageDesigner.
If you have the 830 on the build of your choice, we'll go ahead. The Phone Updater brings the 830 to 1703, if you want to 1709, then call the update service on 830 if the 830 is on 1703.

Klaus, I got the 830 on to 1525.603! It is a little slow but seems fine so far. Will have to see about battery life.
I also found this for you... https://t.me/W10mobile/35864 -- the adblock app by sensboston on XDA.
I have not installed it yet as I am not confident with the method to Interop unlock the phone.
Maybe we can do it together?
Cheers

The basic problem is IMHO, Windows 10 mobile was officially released in the end only for the 640, 550, 650 and 950 by MS. It runs on nearly every Lumia and the Samsung Ativ S, but i would guess not fully optimized (what should be the reason it‘s not officially released). Due to that missing optimizations, the blessed up Windows 10 mobile OS and Dome other reasons, the battery drain and the usability seems worse, compared to WP8.1, Bit without the (App) Store, WP8.1 became complete senseless in my opinion, W10m is a compromize, not more , not less.

Strictly speaking, these are all devices from SD400, but only up to 1607. The 1607 was officially available via upgrade advisor for all SD400 and above. So it's correct that Win10M was developed for the x50 and then adapted for the devices before it. This was implemented via update.

What do you mean by slow, what are you attaching it to? From 1703 there was the new redering engine and that's one reason why all devices before x50 only got the 1607. The SD400 runs fundamentally well with the new redering engine and there are no restrictions in the core functions, but ... . I find that there is a minimal delay between input and output when the system is heavily loaded.

Many roads lead to Rome, we like to say in German. In your case, the easiest way is to use Interrop Unlock. The last version, as far as I know, is this.
InteropTools_2.0.96.0_x86_x64_arm_th1_LegacyRelease.appxbundle
But you can also use this for the Interop Unlock.
InteropToolsApp_1.9.400.0_arm.appxbundle
This variant is better known as "RC2". However, I would not go back any further. Already in RC2 not all functions are available which have later variants, but it would be enough for the Interop Unlock.
First you switch to developer mode on the 830. In the German menu navigation, the path reads, All Settings / Update and Security / For developers. Install the Interop Tools of your choice, start the Interop Tools with "This Device" or "This Device (through provider extensions)" and switch in the Interop Tools to Unlock / Interop Unlock. Now switch on "Restore NDTKSvc" and restart the 830. After the restart you visit Interop Unlock again and switch on "New Capability Engine Unlock". Restart the 830 and visit Interop Unlock again after restart. If the switches for "Restore NDTKSvc" and "New Capability Engine Unlock" are still on, the interop unlock was successful.

But as I said, viele Wege führen nach Rom.
For the 950 you have to go a different route.
G'day - lloyd - 21.07.20
Skaarj, I agree, it is a compromise I am happy with. W8 was a much nicer UI but not very useful now.
I have noticed it is slower doing simple things like switching between SMS and contacts list. But not unbearable.
I do wonder whether there is any point in trying to modify paging file/virtual memory?

Yes exactly (haha at the 404 page). Except the blog you linked to has version 1.1 whereas the appx from Telegram is 1.2
I have not tried it yet because of my hesitation with interop unlock. But I would like to try it on both the 830 and 950
EDIT I am reading your subsequent posts

Yeah, that‘s the first point nearly everybody complaines about, „Windows 10 mobile is so much slower than WP8“ and they‘re right, to be honest, but that „slower“ results in the simple fact W10m is not that „plain and simple“ designed than WP8, more Features needs more ressources means slower reactions with same hardware. Please give it a try, after a while you‘ll not notice that „slower“ that much and your mom will love her new phone [emoji6]
